Artist Statement

My oil paintings describe lyrical forms and patterns of light in a painterly style. I am inspired by the Russian School style training I received and by classical technique. I strive to transcend the physical scenes depicted on canvas, evoking emotion and shared human experiences through the process of painting. In my work I am sensitive to light, color, shapes, manipulation values, temperature and edges. I use a variety of brushes, a collection of palette knives, and even my fingers to create impressions, achieve expressive surface textures and explore favorite themes. Whether the intention of my paintings is to depict drama and movement or a sense of serenity and peace, I strive for truth in strong compositions that extend an invitation to the viewer.

Resume

Marin Dobson is an artist who has won awards and national recognition for her distinctive oil paintings of the natural landscape. Her paintings transcend the physical scenes depicted on canvas and evoke emotion through the bold use of color, texture, and composition. Her oil paintings have been juried into prestigious national shows in New York NY, San Francisco and Carmel CA, Scottsdale AZ, Santa Fe and Taos, NM. Some of these shows include the Oil Painters of America National and Regional Shows, the American Women Artists National Show, the Catherine Lorillard Wolfe National Show, the Allied Artists of America National Show and the Audubon Artists National Shows. Her work describes lyrical forms and patterns of light in a painterly style that reflect the influences of her Russian impressionist training and her study of classical painting technique. She paints primarily alla prima and en plein air. The experience of painting from life infuses her work with a luminous color quality.

Marin`s trademark oil paintings display brilliant colors and poetic forms often of aspen trees in autumn superimposed upon intense cobalt blue skies. “I am passionate about the process of painting, manipulating colors, values, temperatures and edges to create impressions and the atmospheric effects that I love. I use a variety of brushes, a collection of palette knives, and even my fingers to achieve expressive surface textures and explore favorite themes. Whether the intention of my paintings is to depict drama and movement or a sense of serenity and peace, I strive for truth in strong compositions that extend an invitation to the viewer."
Marin Dobson is represented by Abend Gallery, Denver CO, Artists on Santa Fe Gallery, Denver CO, Rijks Family Gallery, Crested Butte CO., Elkhorn Gallery in Winter Park, Colorado and Sheldon Fine Art Galleries of Naples, FL and Newport, RI.
